Ocular Coherence Tomography at Our Fair Oaks CA Eye Care Center
Some of the most damaging eye and vision problems can also be some of the least obvious to the people who have them. Tiny changes in the retinal tissues can make a profound impact on your long-term clarity of vision. The earlier your eye care team can detect and deal with these problems, the more successfully you can avoid complications. That's why we're proud to offer a diagnostic technology called ocular coherence tomography (OCT) here at Swan Family Optometry in Fair Oaks, CA.
What Is Ocular Coherence Tomography?
Ocular coherence tomography uses infrared light waves to capture images of your retinas, those light-sensitive tissues lining the eye that collect visual data for processing by the brain. These light waves pass straight through the eye to the retina, where they take cross-sectional pictures showing the thickness of various layers of retinal tissues. Our OCT machine also takes detailed images of the optic nerves.
We may recommend an OCT scan for anyone who currently has (or has an elevated risk for) glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular swelling or puckering, retinal tears or wrinkles, and other conditions that affect the eyes' ability to transmit data to the brain. Early detection and close monitoring of these conditions allows us to prescribe or change treatment plans accordingly, which helps to protect your eyes against additional, more extensive damage.
What to Expect from an OCT Scan
Ocular coherence tomography is an easy and painless form of testing. We may start by giving you eye drops that dilate your pupils, ensuring an optimal view of the eye's interior. You'll then face the OCT machine with your head stabilized by a support device. The OCT machine completes its diagnostic scan in a matter of minutes. Bear in mind, however, that pupil dilation can take hours to reverse itself and you will need to make the necessary arrangements for transportation home.
The digital images produced by our OCT machine allow for instant viewing on a computer monitor. This means that we can show you the images, point out any abnormalities that appear in them, and discuss treatment options with you right then and there. Periodic re-scams can make any changes in your condition from one visit to the next immediately evident.
