Commonly known as the white of the eye, it’s the sclera that gives that portion of the eye its white color. A clear membrane called the conjunctiva covers the sclera.

Nearsightedness, crossed eyes and lazy eye are the most common eye problems. Some problems, if left untreated, can cause permanent loss of sight. But because many conditions can be corrected, it is important that children’s eye be checked shortly after birth and before starting school.

An increasing number of Americans suffer from low vision. There are many causes ranging from premature birth to age-related macular degeneration. Diabetes, traumatic brain injury, cataracts and glaucoma are also causes.

As a result of this increased need, more vision aids are becoming available. The essential first step, of course, is to get proper eyewear to support your particular condition. We have a comprehensive diagnostic approach that provides our clients with customized solutions based on their needs and range of activities.

If you are someone you know has had to give up certain activities, do some research. A low vision magnifier might help extend those abilities. There are special reading glasses, magnifiers mounted on eyeglasses, handheld magnifiers, magnifiers on stands, video camera magnifiers and telescopes.

One thing to consider is your specific need for a low vision magnifier. Is it to help you read? Accomplish tasks? Operate equipment? Maybe you just need additional lighting or something to free both hands for a particular activity.

We suggest that you do plenty of research on the various options to see what device works best for your particular need. If you’re not sure where to get information, give us a call and we can direct you. You can also check out this link for some basic information including pictures of various devices:

Low Vision Magnifiers

Some low vision magnifiers are pricey so do your research first and determine what you need and how you’ll use it before you buy.

An annual survey conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA) shows that most people now understand the importance of regular comprehensive eye exams.

The survey also shows that habits, opinions, and level of knowledge about eye care vary from generation to generation. For instance, the 2011 survey found that “younger generations are the most diligent about following their doctor’s recommendations for wear and care of lenses” whereas baby boomers have room for improvement. Who would have thought?

All ages are experiencing increased negative side effects from using technology for work and play although younger people reported higher incidences. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is linked to light sensitivity, fatigue, neck and back pain, dry eye, and general eye strain.

Compared with older generations, younger people are “nearly twice as likely to consider eye glasses a fashion accessory.” They are more likely to have seasonal eye allergies and less likely to understand the links between vision problems and diabetes and glaucoma.

Younger women share their cosmetics more than older women do. Age may bring more awareness and understanding of the ways bacteria is spread, leading to eye infections.

One easy way to raise overall awareness of eye health across the generations is to share knowledge intergenerationally. Tell Grandpa what you know about eye care. And maybe he’ll tell you a thing or two that could help preserve your eyesight until you reach his age and beyond.

Remember that we are here as an educational resource for you and your family. Give us a call if you’d like more information.

Those who work around chemicals, flying particles (even dust) or splashing liquids are probably already aware of the dangers. Hazards such as fumes, lighting, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens can be found in certain other work environments.

Your employer should be providing appropriate eye protection. If not, ask about it. If you are self-employed, conduct an eye hazard assessment of your workplace. We carry several several lines of safety eyewear which meet federal ANSI standards for safety including Wiley X Eyewear, which is the manufacturer of all US Military eyewear. Wiley X has fashionable styles for motorcyclists, bicyclists, target shooters, and outdoor adventurists.

We are here to offer advice and suggestions to you and your employer, and are a phone call or e-mail away.

Call us instead and let us identify the specific cause.

If you’ve got low-level non-persistent irritation, here are a few pointers:

• Dry eyes: can be caused by fatigue, dehydration, certain medications, exposure to wind or sun, or extended periods of reading or computer work. Choose an OTC eye drop that is not a decongestant. Decongestant eye drops can the blood vessels to shrink, making the eyes whiter. But they can cause dryness and irritation—some of the very conditions you might be trying to reduce. They can also cause the pupils to dilate.

• Red eyes: can be caused by infection, fatigue, allergies or dryness. OTC drops can lubricate and help flush the eyes to free them from pollen.

If you’ve got any sort of discharge, the chances are you’ve got an eye infection. In that case, it’s best to come in and get checked. We may prescribe an antibiotic eye drop to treat the underlying problem once we’ve got an accurate diagnosis. If you use eye drops, make sure you don’t touch your eye with the container, to avoid contamination.

You can find more information about eye health and care for the eyes at www.allaboutvision.com or give our office a quick call. We’re here to help.
