Choosing the Right Prescription Sunglasses: Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

Do Not Make These Mistakes When It Comes to Protecting Your Eyes from Sun Damage

At Swan Family Optometry we see many patients dealing with the effects of accumulative damage from the sun's UV rays. Many people do not realize how important eye protection is when it comes to the sun. Even the same people who will take the time to apply sunscreen do not realize they need the equivalent for their eyes. We want to educate our patients about the effects the sun can have on eyes, and let you know about common mistakes many people make that may risk their sight to UV rays each day. If you are in need of updated or new prescription sunglasses call for your appointment today.

Are You Making These Common Mistakes That Risks Sun damage to Your Eyes?

  • Not wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Not all shades are created equal, make sure if you purchase over the counter sunglasses that they guarantee 100% UV protection.

  • Not purchasing shades that you will feel good enough to wear at all times. If you won't wear them because of style or comfort reasons then they are not doing their job. It does not take long for UV damage to occur and the harmful effects can accumulate over time.

  • Wearing shades that you have to change out with eyeglasses to read or see well. If you have sunglasses and eyeglasses then it is time to upgrade to prescription sunglasses so you are not removing your shades just when you need the protection the most.

  • Not wearing sunglasses year-round. Even though the need is most obvious in the summer, you should wear UV protected shades every time you are in the sun.
